Mindset training for professionals in the business world is not a typical training program offered, yet professional development is highly regarded. According to one industry report, in 2017 U. S. Corporations spent over $90 billion dollars on employee training. The results are mixed. There are obvious job specific trainings that have to go into any businesses budget. Then there are trainings where the goal is typically to make a more competitive workforce, increase employee retention, and achieve higher employee productivity and satisfaction. The latter is where the results become mixed and I would argue it is because trainings are really not trainings, but are learning opportunities which rarely work on training the mindsets of professionals in the business, legal, and medical fields.
In my nearly 30 years of working with students who lacked what is commonly referred to as a growth mindset, we had to figure out ways to change that mindset. Using my background in NLP, Time Line Therapy techniques [Time Line Therapy is a registered trade mark of Tad James], Advanced Behavioral Modeling, and hypnosis as well as having my Master’s Degree in Special Education specializing in behavior, we had to figure out how to shift mindsets while teaching traditional subject matter. Training mindsets was really what we were about, while secondarily we were training them how to learn. It was not ideal methodology, but I did come to realize that when we were really successful, we were either able to find a way to hold the students accountable to commit to the training or their parents were able to hold them accountable.
In my private work with students and athletes, coaches and parents were also critical to the process. While this is especially true for teenagers, it is also true for adults. Mindset training for professionals is also much more affective when they have someone helping to hold them accountable. The vast majority of people need someone to hold them accountable and provide external incentives. Of course, when you have someone internally motivated that is truly what you are looking for, but that person is a rare minority. We definitely want to move them to the internal motivation or self-discipline that is so very important for success. The process I coined for what I did in training mindsets was applying HEAT – habit, emotion, attitude, training. The general process is the same whether doing mindset training for professionals, teens, or athletes.
For the corporate human resources department they have the unenviable task of finding, keeping, and improving their employees. The larger the corporation with variety of jobs the more challenging the task. Again, part of the problem is not stopping to think about what you truly want to accomplish. Rarely, do they focus on mindsets training for professionals in their corporation.
A large number of the traits the business world list as most desirable are related to the mindset of the individual.
I did an internet search using this question, “What are the most important character traits employers look for in an employee,” and took the responses from the first four websites that came up. I found 26 character traits or skills employees were looking for listed on these four websites. Here is the list of the traits:
A large number of these words on the list are related to the mindset of the individual. If you want employees with these skills and these character traits then this mindset training for professionals should be the core to your professional development program. If businesses developed these skills and traits into even a fraction of their workforce, don’t you believe those employees would make a more competitive workforce, be more likely to stay with your company, and be more productive and satisfied employees? Those employees who don’t would likely move along in time.
If you want employees with these skills and these character traits then training mindsets should be a core to your professional development program.
Training mindsets is the obvious goal of the Growth Mindset Training Academy curriculum. We are interested in training mindsets for professionals, teenagers, and athletes. Mindsets are the key. A growth mindset is characterized by a core belief that intelligence can be developed, which leads to a desire to learn and therefor a tendency to:
As a result they attain higher levels of achievement. All that is well and good as far as it goes, but it is woefully incomplete.
Training mindsets is really about building a mindset of a champion. There a number of mindsets that go into this over-arching mindset. Before building the mindset though, people need to begin developing this self-reflective identity that is one of the characteristics sought after. You see, for people to become the best they can be, to develop that mindset of a champion, they need to discover what emotional and attitudinal and habits are interfering with their ability to achieve their desired outcomes, manage stress, and find joy in living.
To do this we have a 10 week 70 day training that will help them identify stored negative emotions, limiting decisions, and beliefs. They discover their most important values and identify if there are any conflicts between these values. After doing significant sole searching and identifying them they are guided through a process to release those obstacles. It can be quite profound for many people. An effective mindset training for professionals must deal with these chains of negativity people drag around with them.
Our breakthrough mindset training is all about helping people discover the unconsciously held decisions, emotions, and beliefs that interfere with their ability to be all they can be.
Training mindsets of love is the focus of the first training. The training builds habits, emotional thinking, and an attitude that are grounded in 13 character traits of love. Those traits are patience, kindness, not being envious but being able to give sincere appreciation to others, not being boastful or proud, not being dishonoring of others but learning to honor others for their successes, not being self-seeking, being slow to anger, abhorring evil, rejoicing in truthfulness, being protective, being trustworthy and trusting, being hopeful, and being perseverant. Compare these traits to the ones in the list above and you will see that these traits correspond very favorably with the ones in the chart. Mindset training for professionals begins with training those love characteristics that are so highly valued.
Mindset training for professionals, as well as anyone in general, needs to deal with integrity. Dealing with integrity means dealing with trust which entails faith. Training mindsets built on faith contributes to the development of other character traits from the chart previously mentioned. The primary trait being targeted is integrity. Part of the idea of integrity gets built in this training while other parts get built in the training on spirit. Training mindsets of faith focuses on challenging people to answer the question do you really believe that what you believe is really real.
If you think you really believe something but deep-down you have doubts you will not act with integrity to what you think you believe. Ultimately, this can lead to hypocrisy. Integrity and congruency are vital traits and why we spend this time in our mindset training for professionals working on faith, which greatly influences those traits. We challenge those in this training to investigate 8 major world views to see how they answer deep spiritual questions that greatly influence people at unconscious levels. What happens to people is sometimes the culture they live in is in conflict with beliefs they think they have. Your home culture may have taught you certain things you thought you believed, but the larger cultural influences can impact those beliefs without you being consciously aware. The degree of difference between what you think you believe and what you actually believe can create internal conflicts and come across as having integrity issues or at worse being known as a hypocrite. The world view challenge tries to bring this to light for people by having them investigate the 8 major world views and see if they have any conflicts with the world view they think they have and the beliefs they hold. It is quite difficult if not impossible to be congruent if you don’t really believe that what you think you believe is really real.
Training a mindset of faithfulness focuses on eight characteristics: being a follower and a leader, humility, meekness, long-suffering, forbearing, stewardship, foresight-fulness, and selflessness. Of those, the most often misunderstood is meekness. Meekness is not timidity.
In training a mindset of faithfulness, there are a few more characteristics we are working to engrain into individuals emotional thinking, and attitude. The use of habitual routines and various behavioral tools are the methodology. Our training of a mindset of faithfulness focuses on these eight characteristics: being a follower and a leader, humility, meekness, long-suffering, forbearing, stewardship, foresight-fulness, and selflessness. Of those, the most often misunderstood is meekness. As psychologist Jordan Peterson puts it, “Those who have the weapons and know how to use them and still keep them sheathed…” are the meek. That word encompasses so many traits such as love, mercy, wisdom, and being slow to anger. Meekness is not timidity. It is strength and power, and having the wisdom on how and when to use that strength and power. When you look at the other characteristics on this list and match them with those on the chart you will see we are really covering the most important traits employers want in employees.
Mindset training for professionals should address a family mindset because a strong family bond makes for better workers and members of a community. The training of the family mindset encompasses two components. The first is discovering the influence your family has had on your mindset – good and or bad. By discovering its influence you can then begin to take control of your mindset in this area. The second is to look at what goes into making a family unit strong and functioning.
When families begin to fall apart the consequences can be seen and felt outside that family circle. It does influence people’s ability to focus on their work and be a fully functioning team member. It has a whole host of issues that weigh heavily on the person going through the divorce and the ripple effect can create issues outside that family circle. No one ever wants to go through a divorce or see their family break up. This training assumes that most families want to make things work and looks at what those key ingredients are. What habits, emotions, attitudes need to be trained in this particular training to help families thrive was the question that drove the creation of it. When employees have a happy, stable family life they are generally better to be around than if their family life is dysfunctional. Providing an opportunity for employees to take this mindset training for professionals training will only benefit benefit the business and those who participate in the course.
The emotions and attitudes that are at the core of the mindset of friendship have been introduced in the mindset of love, faith, and faithfulness. Those traits are already being internalized and made into habits and this training reinforces that helping them become part of your very being.
Mindset training for professionals should also train the mindset and skillset for winning friends and influencing people. Training mindsets of friendships is more about specific skills than the emotions and attitudes. The reason for that is the emotions and attitudes that are at the core of the mindset of friendship have been already brought up in the mindset of love, faith, and faithfulness. Those are traits that people are already trying to internalize and habitualize and make part of their very being. The training to this point has given the methodology, the knowledge, the processes, and the system that is necessary for lifetime process that is training mindsets. No one should be thinking they will done at the end of this training. At the end of this training, you should have fully developed the habits, emotional management tools and practices, and attitude tools and practices to be continually developing the mindset of a champion. You will have it when done, but it will get better with age. Mindset training for professionals is no different than any other mindset training - it is a lifetime process.
In this modern world, knowledge is growing at an exponential rate and it requires the right mindset to handle it. Mindset training for professionals has to train people with the right mindset to be able to deal with this fast changing world. Training mindsets of life-long learning first deals with the necessary beliefs or attitude one needs to learn. It encompasses the culture of learning and good learning practices. Learning cannot not happen, so helping people understand how to learn and why we learn helps develop the mindset that enables them to learn better. With knowledge increasing at the rate it is, learning to learn and wanting to learn are important characteristics of desirable employees. It should be no surprise that it was on the list of desirable traits in employees. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of evidence that our students are not leaving school with the skill set, the ability to reason, solve problems, and communicate effectively never mind the character traits we are discussing here, and the business world is bearing the brunt of that training as well as the problems associated with people who are not ready to learn. This training goes to the root of that problem – habits, emotions, and attitude associated with learning. Mindset training for professionals goes to the heart of the issue.
If you do the work, you will train the habits, emotions, and attitude that characterize a growth mindset or the mindset of a champion.
Training mindsets would be incomplete without dealing with our well-being. We all know the statistics about the costs of healthcare and the costs of poor health not just financially but socially or culturally as well. Businesses are being impacted with increased costs for insurance and lost productivity at work. Mindset training for professionals has an entire training module dealing with well-ness.
When we look at the simple financial costs of lost work time, poor performance, and lack of job satisfaction that can come from people who do not tend to be healthy and fit, it becomes cost effective to help employees become healthy and fit. Many corporations and insurance companies offer numerous incentives and wellness programs. The incentives are especially helpful. What most of these lack is the complete package of mindset training that allows goals to become reality. This training is especially effective as part of the entire training program. All the other pieces lead up to this making it far more likely people will follow through. It is excellent on its own merits; as part of the entire training package, it is exceptional.
This training is the keystone. It is what binds all the others together. We come full circle and will reinforce and improve upon the two foundational habits – the morning and evening rituals. Mindset training for professionals needs to tie all the pieces together and the spirit of the person is truly what demonstrates their mindset. In this training module, students will develop more practice on breathing and meditation practices. More training on goal setting and discovering even more about themself. Building the strong attitude to deal with the fast pace of change in the modern world as well as the unexpected and often ambiguous life events that will take the wind out of your sail. This training is long and thorough giving you the knowledge and practice at developing all the habits, emotions, and attitudes you will need to thrive and become a champion at life.

This entire mindset training for professionals curriculum is encompassing and incredibly valuable. It takes commitment to complete. Only about 10% of all Boy Scouts earn the Eagle Scout rank. It comes with honor because of that. It is similar to this training in that the commitment to complete the entire curriculum represents something challenging and honorable. Business owners are in a position to provide more external persuasion to help more of their employees finish the training. It is true that we want our clients to develop self-discipline, but we recognize that to jump start the process that is required external motivation is often needed.
While many surveys indicate money is not as valuable a motivator for the younger generations, it certainly doesn’t hurt. Promotions and honoring people in other ways are also invaluable. We work with business owners to set up a process to encourage employees to complete the entire curriculum. Here are some typical ways business do that:
